About the tool

A free STL to STEP converter that runs in your browser

Everything you need to know before you convert STL to STEP: how it works, what you get and why no upload is needed.

stl to step is a free STL to STEP converter online that turns 3D-printing meshes into STEP files (.step or .stp) that open in your CAD software. Most STL to STEP file converters upload your model to a server. This one doesn’t. The whole STL to STEP conversion runs on your own computer, phone or tablet, so it is fast, private and unlimited.

What is an STL to STEP file converter?

An STL file describes the outside of a 3D object as thousands of small triangles. That suits slicers and 3D printers, but CAD programs such as SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Inventor, CATIA and Onshape work best with STEP, the ISO 10303 standard for exchanging engineering data. An STL to STEP file converter reads every triangle in the mesh and writes it out as a STEP boundary representation (B-rep), with faces, edges and vertices stitched into a solid or a surface model. The resulting STL to STEP file imports cleanly into almost any CAD package, CAM tool or PLM system.

Can you convert STL to STEP?

Yes, you can convert STL to STEP, and with this tool it takes seconds. It helps to know what to expect, though. An STL holds only triangles. It keeps no record of the cylinders, fillets or sketches the part was designed with. So when you convert an STL to STEP, you get a faceted solid: the same shape, built from flat faces. That is exactly what you need to measure a part, add holes or bosses, run booleans, create CNC toolpaths, check the fit against other parts or send a model to a colleague who only works in CAD. If you need fully parametric geometry, use the STEP as an accurate reference and remodel the critical features on top of it.

How to convert an STL to a STEP file online

  1. Drop one or more STL files onto the converter at the top of this page, or click to browse. Binary and ASCII STL are both supported.
  2. Check the model in the 3D viewer, along with its dimensions, triangle count, volume and whether the mesh is watertight.
  3. Choose the units the model was designed in (mm, cm, m or inches) and leave “Merge flat faces” switched on for cleaner geometry.
  4. Click Convert, then download each STEP file, or download the whole batch as one ZIP.

There’s no account to create and no queue to wait in. Your STL to STEP online conversion starts the moment you click.

STL to STEP online free, with no upload

Most sites that offer STL to STEP online free conversion send your file to their servers, process it there and keep a copy for a while. That is a problem for client work, unreleased products and anything under an NDA. This converter works differently. The page loads once, and from then on the conversion runs in a Web Worker inside your browser. Your file is never uploaded, stored or shared, and you can even go offline after the page has loaded and keep converting. Because nothing runs on a server, there are no daily limits, no file size caps, no watermarks and no paid tiers.

Cleaner STEP files with merged flat faces

A basic STL to STEP conversion turns every triangle into its own CAD face. That can leave you with tens of thousands of faces that are slow to load and awkward to select. The “Merge flat faces” option joins neighbouring triangles that lie on the same plane into a single face. A cube goes from 12 triangular faces to 6 square ones, and the flat sides of a bracket become single faces you can click, measure and offset. The STEP file is smaller, imports faster and is much easier to edit.

Solids, surfaces and units

If your mesh is closed and watertight, the converter writes a true solid (a closed-shell B-rep) in STEP AP214, the format every major CAD system reads. If the mesh has holes or gaps, it writes a surface model instead, so no geometry is lost. To get a solid, repair the STL in your slicer or Meshmixer and convert it again. STL files carry no units, so you pick them before you convert STL to STEP, and your CAD software then imports the part at the correct size.

Is there an STL to STEP AI converter?

You’ll see STL to STEP AI tools that promise to turn meshes back into perfect parametric CAD. Today, no AI and no other automatic method can reliably recover the original design intent from a mesh, because the sketches, constraints and feature history simply aren’t in the file. Some tools fit cylinders and planes to scan data. That helps with reverse engineering, but an engineer still has to check and finish the model. stl to step doesn’t guess. It uses plain geometry: it reads every triangle, merges the flat regions and writes an exact, standards-compliant STEP file. What you see in the viewer is exactly what you get in your CAD program.

Who uses this STL to STEP converter?

Makers use it to modify Thingiverse and Printables downloads in Fusion 360 or FreeCAD. Engineers use it to bring 3D scans and supplier meshes into SolidWorks or Inventor for fit checks. Students use it to hand in coursework in the STEP format their tutors ask for, and machinists use it to plan CNC toolpaths from printable models. Whatever your reason to convert STL to STEP files, the tool is free and private, and it’s ready whenever you need it.

FAQ

STL to STEP: frequently asked questions

How to convert STL to STEP (and STEP to STL), how the formats differ, and how this converter works.

Converting STL and STEP

How to convert STL to STEP?

Drop your STL file onto the converter at the top of this page. Check the model in the 3D viewer, choose the units it was designed in (usually mm), leave “Merge flat faces” on and click Convert. Your STEP file is created in your browser in a few seconds and is ready to download. You don’t need any software or an account, and nothing is uploaded.

How to convert an STL file to STEP?

You have two options. The quickest is an online STL to STEP converter like this one: drop the STL file, click Convert and download the .step file. You can also do it in CAD software. In FreeCAD, import the STL, then use Part › Create shape from mesh and Part › Convert to solid, and export the result as STEP. In Fusion 360, insert the mesh and use Convert Mesh before exporting. Both routes give you the same kind of faceted solid.

Can you convert STL to STEP?

Yes. You can convert STL to STEP for free, online, on any device: Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone, iPad or Android. This converter runs entirely in your browser, so your file is never uploaded, and there are no limits on file size or on the number of files.

Can I convert STL to STEP?

Yes, you can, even without CAD software or a CAD licence. All you need is a modern web browser. Drop your STL into the converter on this page, and you’ll get a STEP file that opens in SolidWorks, Fusion 360, FreeCAD, Onshape, Inventor, CATIA and most other CAD and CAM programs.

Is it possible to convert STL to STEP?

Yes, but it helps to know what you get. An STL contains only triangles, so the STEP file is a faceted solid. It has exactly the same shape, built from flat faces, but it isn’t a parametric model with true cylinders, fillets and a feature history. It’s ideal for measuring, adding features, booleans, CNC machining and sharing with CAD users. If you need editable curves, use the STEP as a reference and remodel those features.

How to make a .STEP file?

If you design the part yourself, export it from your CAD program. In SolidWorks, Fusion 360, FreeCAD, Onshape or Inventor, use File › Export (or Save As) and pick STEP (.step or .stp), choosing AP214 or AP242 if you’re asked. If you only have a mesh, such as an STL from Thingiverse, Printables or a 3D scanner, convert it with this STL to STEP converter.

How to convert STEP to STL?

This tool converts STL to STEP only. To go the other way, open the STEP file in a CAD program and export it as a mesh. In Fusion 360, right-click the body and choose Save As Mesh. In SolidWorks, use File › Save As › STL. In Onshape, right-click the part and choose Export, then STL. Many slicers, including PrusaSlicer and Bambu Studio, can also open STEP files directly and slice them.

How to convert a STEP file to STL?

A free way is to use FreeCAD. Open the STEP file, select the part in the model tree, then go to File › Export and choose “STL Mesh”. For smoother curves, switch to the Mesh workbench, use Meshes › Create mesh from shape with a lower surface deviation, and export that mesh instead.

How to convert .step to .stl?

.step and .stp are the same format, so the method is identical for both: open the file in a CAD program and export it as .stl. When you export, the program asks for the mesh resolution, usually as a deviation (chordal tolerance) and an angle. A finer setting gives smoother curves but a bigger file. For 3D printing, a deviation between 0.01 and 0.05 mm suits most parts.

STL, STEP and other formats

Is STEP the same as STL?

No. STL describes only the surface of a model, as a mesh of triangles, with no units, colours or design data. It’s the standard format for 3D printing. STEP (ISO 10303) describes solids with exact faces, edges and curves, stores units, and can hold assemblies and colours. It’s the standard format for exchanging CAD data between programs such as SolidWorks, Fusion 360 and CATIA.

What is the best STL to STEP converter?

It depends on what you need. For a quick, free and private conversion, a browser-based tool like stl to step is hard to beat: there’s no upload and no sign-up, and you get batch conversion plus flat-face merging for cleaner geometry. If you need a fully parametric model with true cylinders and fillets rebuilt from a 3D scan, you need reverse-engineering software such as Geomagic Design X, or the mesh tools in Fusion 360, plus some manual modelling.

Which is better, STL or OBJ?

Neither is better overall, because they suit different jobs. STL is simpler and every slicer supports it, so it’s the usual choice for single-colour 3D printing. OBJ can store polygons, UV coordinates and colours or textures (through an MTL file), so it’s better for rendering, games and full-colour models. For colour 3D printing, 3MF is often a better choice than either, and for CAD work you should convert to STEP.

Can a STEP file be 3D printed?

Yes, but it usually has to be turned into a mesh first, because printers work from triangles. Some slicers, including PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer, can import STEP files directly and mesh them for you. Otherwise, export the STEP as STL or 3MF from your CAD program and slice that. Printing from STEP has one advantage: you choose the mesh resolution, so curves come out as smooth as you like.

What is a drawback of STL files?

The biggest drawback is that an STL approximates curves with flat triangles. Round parts come out faceted, and accuracy depends on the mesh resolution, so finer meshes mean much larger files. STL also stores no units, colours, materials or design history, which makes STL files hard to edit in CAD software. That’s why engineers convert STL to STEP before modifying a part.

Using this converter

Is this STL to STEP converter really free?

Yes. There are no sign-ups, no watermarks, no daily limits and no paid tiers. The conversion runs on your own device, so it costs us nothing to run and costs you nothing to use.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Your STL is read and converted inside your browser using a Web Worker. Nothing is uploaded, stored or shared, which makes it safe for confidential parts and client work. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it keeps working.

Will the STEP file have smooth, editable CAD surfaces?

An STL only stores triangles, so the STEP file is a faceted solid made of flat faces. It is not a parametric model with true cylinders or fillets, and no automatic converter can recover that design intent. With “Merge flat faces” on, every flat area becomes a single CAD face, which makes the model far easier to select, measure and modify in SolidWorks, Fusion 360, FreeCAD, Onshape or Inventor.

What does “Merge flat faces” do?

It joins neighbouring triangles that lie on the same plane into one face. A cube goes from 12 triangles to 6 faces, and a bracket with flat sides is far cleaner. The STEP file is smaller and your CAD software handles it faster.

Why is my STEP exported as a surface model instead of a solid?

A solid needs a closed, watertight mesh. If your STL has holes, gaps or flipped triangles, we export it as a surface model so no geometry is lost. Repair the mesh in your slicer or Meshmixer and convert it again to get a solid.

Which units should I choose?

STL files have no units. Most 3D-printing STLs are modelled in millimetres, so mm is the default. Pick the unit the model was designed in, and your CAD software will import it at the correct size.

Can I convert several STL files at once?

Yes. Drop as many STL files as you like. Each one is converted in turn, and you can download them one by one or all together as a single ZIP file.

Is there a file size limit?

There is no fixed limit, because everything runs on your device. Files of a few hundred megabytes convert fine on a modern laptop. Very dense meshes with millions of triangles produce large STEP files, so turning on “Merge flat faces” or decimating the mesh first can help.

Does it work on phones and tablets?

Yes. The converter and the 3D viewer work in any modern mobile browser, including Safari on iPhone and iPad and Chrome on Android.

Does this STL to STEP converter use AI?

No. It uses exact geometry rather than AI guesswork: every triangle is read, flat regions are merged and a standards-compliant STEP file is written. No AI tool can reliably rebuild the original parametric design from a mesh, because that information isn’t stored in an STL.

Should I save as .step or .stp?

They are the same format (ISO 10303-21) with two common extensions. Pick whichever your CAD software or client prefers. Both open everywhere.
